Description

Triceratops beetle
Scientific name:
Length: 10 inches
Habitat: rainforests and tropical woodlands
Native region: South America
Evolved from: scarab beetle
Lifespan: few weeks for males and 6 years for females

The triceratops beetle is a species of future scarab which has evolved a single head horn and a pair of oversized mandibles which give it an intimidating appearance. It is nonetheless harmless, and uses its jaws only to fight for mates. Only males exhibit the enormous mandibles, with females having much smaller ones. Because males' jaws are so large, they do not feed as adults and live only a few weeks. Females, with small jaws suited to chewing leaves, may live several years and lay many hundreds of eggs in that time.
